Ingredients
  

Cake Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk

Buttercream Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions
 

Make the Cake:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  • Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the dry mixture. Mix just until combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.

Make the Buttercream:

  • Beat the butter until creamy. Slowly add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well.
  • Stir in vanilla and a pinch of salt. Add cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.

Assemble the Cake:

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a thick layer of buttercream on top.
  • Add the second layer and apply a crumb coat (a thin layer of frosting to trap crumbs). Chill for 20 minutes.
  • Spread a final layer of frosting over the cake, and decorate as desired.

Notes

For a fun twist, you can add red or pink gel food coloring to the batter or frosting for Valentine’s Day vibes!
